7 Tips on How to Study For Your TEFL Course

Preparing to study is no easy feat. With hundreds and thousands of distractions (cough Instagram cough) and busy lives, we know it can be hard to get in the right frame of mind. That’s why we are here to help!

Read about our 7 best tips to create an excellent environment for you to smash your course:

1. Setting Small, Achievable Goals

Don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking you have to sit down and complete the whole thing at once. Break the course down into smaller sections, such as an hour or two a day to make it more manageable. Or do what works well for your schedule, such as setting aside one day a week instead. You have 180 days to complete your Advanced course and that is plenty of time! Trust us. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Spreading it over 180 days is easy, you’ll remember what you’ve learnt and have time to go over it again. Panicking at the end is no fun. Plus if for any reason you don’t complete the course you can buy an extension for £9.

2. Carving Out Specific Time

If you have a busy schedule due to work, school or university - it’s more likely you’ll put it off to the next day and suddenly that snowballs until there are no more days! Getting organised and planning time within your day to study will keep you motivated!

Or get someone to hold you accountable and do a TEFL course with a friend! You can encourage each other, and study at the same time, and even go and teach together once you’re TEFL certified!

3. Creating a Great Work Environment

Clear up your desk, reduce distractions, put your phone away! There are many tools and apps that keep you from scrolling and going on your phone for no reason. Have water on your desk to keep refreshed and light a candle - did you know smell association is a great way to learn? And you’re good to go! Clear space, clear mind.

4. Find your Study Style

Everyone has a different study style, so try out different ones to see what works best for you! Make those notes, use coloured pens, create flashcards, try repetition - whatever works for you. Try new things too and you might find an even better way to study.

5. Use the Support System UK-TEFL Provides

Our advisors and trainers are here for you. We aim to reply within 24 hours on weekdays, and we’re always happy to help. Having the extra support and guidance is great so take advantage of it! No question is silly or pointless, and there can never be too many!

6. Boost Your Learning

Add to what you have learnt and complete further exercises and extra reading. This can be achieved by reading our Absolute TEFL: The Ultimate Teaching Guide! This training manual tells you everything you need to know about becoming a successful TEFL teacher and is the best training guide available. What’s more it was written specifically for UK-TEFL by our Director of Studies, Danielle Mundy.

You can also complete specialist modules that will help you build upon your skills and allow you to specialise in different areas of TEFL. Try your hand at Teaching Business English, Teaching With Limited Resources or Teaching Young Learners. (PS- these are also great courses to get those better-paid specialist TEFL jobs!)

7. Enjoy it and Get Excited About Your TEFL Career!

Lastly, we hope that you enjoy your learning journey and come out of it feeling confident in starting your new TEFL career!
