CV Tips For Applying to TEFL Jobs

Your CV is literally the first impression you make to the hiring manager, it is so important and so easy to get right. We think these 5 factors are the most important and will make all the difference. Get reading, follow our tips and refresh your CV!

Without further ado we have listed our top 5 tips below:

Keep it Short and Snappy

Keep your CV to 2 A4 pages maximum and stick to the point. It’s very easy to start including every single thing you have ever achieved but DON’T (your bronze D of E isn’t always relevant). Only include jobs and experience that are relevant to the role you are applying for, really highlight the skills you have. No one wants to read a huge chunk of text!

Spelling

Check, check and check again! It’s almost too easy to make mistakes, and mistakes definitely give off the wrong impression. A tool we love to use is Grammarly, it’s free to download so you can’t go wrong. It’s also useful to ask someone to check your CV BUT remember too many opinions can get confusing.

Customise

People often forget to tailor their CV’s to the job they are applying for, especially if they are applying for jobs in the same industry. Read the job description and make sure you are showcasing the skills they are looking for.

Make your CV stand out! We’re not saying add pictures and use every colour under the sun, but add some colours, change the fonts. Remember a CV is a representation of you, so don’t be afraid to add a little personality in there. There are lots of templates you find to help you start e.g. Canva, Publisher, Microsoft.

Keep a good text to space ratio. The layout is everything! Keep the format clean, and easy to read.

This is Your Time to Shine

Use this opportunity to show off your achievements (remember, keep these related to the job). It’s okay to use power/buzzwords, we would even suggest using the same words that are stated in the job description to avoid misunderstandings. A great way of making sure you have covered your basis is to literally list all your skills. Finally, focus your CV on results rather than just a list of responsibilities.

Don’t Be Generic

A generic CV is the worst! You want the recruiter to believe you have really understood the job specification and have made a visible effort to tailor your CV to them.

So the next time you are applying for a TEFL job, keep these points in mind and GOOD LUCK!
