Philippines Proposes Digital Nomad Visa to Boost Tourism

26 Feb, 2025

The Philippine government is taking steps to attract remote workers with the introduction of a new "Digital Nomad Visa" aimed at bolstering the nation's tourism sector. Senator Joel Villanueva has filed Senate Bill No. 2991, designed to provide foreign nationals with the opportunity to live and work remotely in the Philippines for one year, with the possibility of renewal.

Digital nomads, who work from locations around the world, are recognised for their contribution to the economy through spending and engagement with local communities. However, they will not be permitted to take local jobs. If passed into law, the Digital Nomad Visa would be issued through the Bureau of Immigration and available to applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • At least 18 years old

  • Valid health insurance covering the visa period

  • No criminal record in their home country

  • Payment of entry and exit fees

The bill also clarifies that digital nomads will not be considered residents for tax purposes and cannot be employed in the Philippines.

Currently, over 50 countries have similar visa programmes, making the Philippines a competitive destination for the growing number of remote workers. The Digital Nomad Visa is expected to further enhance the country’s appeal as a remote work hub.
