Taiwan’s New Digital Nomad Visa

26 Feb, 2025

Taiwan has introduced a digital nomad visa, allowing remote workers to stay in the country for up to one year. This initiative positions Taiwan alongside Japan, South Korea, and Thailand in offering such visas. The visa aims to attract professionals seeking to work remotely while experiencing Taiwan's rich culture and vibrant environment.

Until recently, the only option for remote workers to stay in Taiwan long-term was the Taiwan Employment Gold Card. However, this new Digital Nomad Visa expands access for professionals who may not meet the Gold Card’s stringent criteria.

To be eligible for Taiwan’s Digital Nomad Visitor Visa, you must meet certain requirements related to nationality, financial status, and documentation.

First, you must be from a visa-exempt country. You can check the list of eligible countries on the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ website.

In addition, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Proof of having received a digital nomad visa from another country.

  • If you are 30 or older: Proof of earning at least £32,000 per year (or equivalent) in one of the last two years.

  • If you are between 20 and 29: Proof of earning at least £16,000 per year (or equivalent) in one of the last two years.

You must show financial stability by maintaining an average bank balance of at least £8,000 over the past six months. You also need to provide a resume and a work contract to confirm your work background and remote employment.

These requirements ensure that you have a steady income, experience working remotely, and enough funds to support yourself while in Taiwan.

Why This Is Beneficial for EFL Teachers

The digital nomad visa presents an excellent opportunity for TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teachers to work and live in Taiwan. With the flexibility to stay for up to a year, teachers can immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture, enhance their teaching experience, and contribute to the local education system. This extended stay allows for deeper cultural integration and professional development, making it an attractive option for TEFL educators seeking international experience.
